You can use margarine instead of butter or shortening and vica-versa even though their not exact in makeup. but to make things a little healthier you can use applesauce or bananas instead.
Anise extract is a sweet licorice flavoring.

You can use margarine any time in place of butter. As for Anise Extract it’s made from the oil of anise seeds. It tastes like licorice and it’s very sweet. Almond extract would be yummy. So would other flavored extracts. Enjoy and stay warm!

Yes, you can. It’s pretty much the same thing and it works :]. I’ve subsituted ordinary sugar for granulated sugar and brown sugar, yet the recipe tastes great :].

You don’t even have to use butter or marganie. If you go to food network ti has a couple recipes witout it. So yeah, it can be sicne all recipes don’t even call for it.
