Can I Use Vanilla Pods In My Cake Instead Of Vanilla Essence?

January 18th, 2010 by Rexx

I don’t want any alcohol in the cake and the vanilla essence contains alcohol so is it ok just to use the pod? If so, What am I meant to do with the pod – scoop out the inside or throw it in the coffee which then goes into the cake? (the coffee is part of the recipe) Thanks

Yes, slice it open and scrape out the seeds. You can then use the seeds in your recipe.( throw away the bark like bit) Perfect. You were right in what you said. Good luck, sounds nice.

Make an infusion of the pod, with the hot liquid (coffee)? Strain before use, discard the pod. I have vanilla essence that does not contain alcohol, so it must be available.

You should try and use vanilla extract which is actually made from vanilla pods unlike vanilla essence.
But if you do use vanilla pods, then split the pod and scrape the seeds (paste) and use that.
TIP: DON’T throw away the pod, put it in an air tight container with some sugar. After a while you will have vanilla sugar.
    Good luck

Vanilla essence will work a lot better, pods not a good idear,
the alcohol content is minimal and would not cause any affect. you will make a wonderful cake just stick to the recipe.
