Okay So A Recipe Substitute?
January 19th, 2010 by Rexx
I am making a special kind of coffee and it the recipe asks for Vanilla bean and Dark roast coffee; It’s like a mexican coffee type of thing.
So! can I substitute the vanilla bean with real vanilla extract (or vanilla flavor), even though I am supposed to put the vanilla bean in with the grounds while they are brewing?
And can I sub medium roast coffee for the dark roast, and just use more grounds, or would that just completely fu*k it up?
If these seem like realy basic questions it’s because I don’t cook much but I really want to in the future,
So can any body help me out?

The old drag racing saying is, you run whatcha brung. If all you have is vanilla extract and dark coffee, make a full pot of coffee, add one cap full of vanilla to a 1/2 cup of water, then add the vanilla-water to the pot of coffee. Serve with Mexican pastries ( I like empandas,) and you are in business

My hat is off to the overqualified previous answerer. I’m sure he is very skilled, in THEORY. I’ll try to be a bit more informative.
You want to use very little vanilla extract–it’s strong, and expensive if you use real stuff (the imitation stuff doesn’t taste right to me). Probably a quarter tsp for 10-12 cups worth of grounds; I’d mix it with the grounds before brewing, because the brewing process of coffee releases aromatic oils in the grounds and the alcohol from the vanilla might overwhelm these if added post-brewing.

i don’t always follow recipes completely, and i just use what i have. just try it out and if it sucks, then go ahead and buy the other ingredients that you need and follow it right. sometimes by changing it up a bit, it comes out better than it would have. just have fun with it. good luck.

Yes you can use vanilla extract or vanilla flavor if you want in the coffee basket or filter wile you brew the coffee. I f it calls for dark roast this means that they want a stronger coffee for what you are making ,therefore you can add more of the medium roast.
You can even get yourself one of those espresso makers ,the one that you put on top of the stove and a can of espresso coffee or use instant express as well and add Vanilla ,or Anise flavour and by the way even anise in seeds if you make the espresso in the maker .
The creation is in your hands so start working and don’t worry about *** no one is perfect!
I have been cooking for many years, and we do improve with time and good books!

The reason the recipe calls for vanilla bean is to have a very slight hint of vanilla. If you use vanilla extract, the vanilla flavor may be very distinct – if not overpowering.
Make a pot of coffee with the ingredients you have on hand.
IF I used vanilla extract I would use a drop or two of the extract.
